World Cup fever has truly arrived at Eastgate shopping centre in Basildon, with the completion of our giant world cup sculpture.Standing more than four metres in height, the sculpture is full of global detail and finished in a stunning gold colour. The work was created by Chelmsford-based sculptor Alistair Smith, 45, who works out of studios in Chelmsford and Brentwood, and took more than three weeks to construct. There also is an environmental element to the sculpture as it is built entirely from cardboard recycled by the Eastgate team. From its lofty position on the Upper Mall the work has quickly become a focal point for the entire centre.Eastgate promotions manager Mike Horton said: “This is a true work of art, replete as it is in detail and demonstrates yet another benefit of having a recycling policy in place. Alistair is immensely talented and we look forward to working with him on more projects in the future.”
