Festive Fun at Eastgate for Little Havens

Christmas has come early for dozens of life-limited children thanks to a local shopping centre.

As the stores closed for the day, Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon was transformed into a winter wonderland for the Little Havens Christmas Party on Sunday 12th December.

Over 60 children from across Essex, along with their siblings and families enjoyed food from Nandos, entertainment from the Performers College in Corringham and local singer Raya, and of course a visit from Father Christmas who handed out presents to everyone! There was also a magician, juggler, face painter and balloon modeller.

One of the children who attended with his family was 11 year-old Luke Burrell from Southend. He was born with a complicated heart condition which has resulted in four open heart operations and eventually he will need a heart and lung transplant.

Luke has been visiting Little Havens for respite breaks over the last nine months. Mum Kathryn, 46, says, “Little Havens is the only place where he can be the true Luke. He can relax and be himself without having to explain to anyone about his condition.

“This is our first hospice Christmas Party and we are bowled over. There is so much for the children and adults. It’s been a wonderful night.”

Mike Horton from Eastgate Shopping says, “This is the seventh year we have arranged the event and it just gets bigger and better every time. We are honoured to host the party and welcome the children and families to the centre. I know it is the highlight of the year for our staff who all give up their time to help out.”

Jane Harwood is the Play Specialist at Little Havens who helps Mike to organise the party. “For our families this party is a chance to meet up with old friends and kick-start their Christmas celebrations.

“We cannot thank Eastgate Shopping Centre enough for all the hard work and dedication which makes this party a success. I know that planning has already started for 2011! ”Little Havens Children’s Hospice is part of Havens Hospices, which also incorporates Fair Havens Hospice for adults.

Little Havens provides respite breaks and end of life care for youngsters living with life-limiting illnesses and conditions. It aims to make their journey – and that of their family – as comfortable as possible, creating special memories along the way.

It will cost £2.3 million this year to continue this care, which is completely free of charge to the families.
