Basildon-Eastgate Art (BEA) now open

As a special treat for shoppers Eastgate is hosting an exhibition of art this summer.

The Basildon arts industry is a thriving community in its own right thanks to the talent, dedication and enthusiasm of so many professional and amateur artists locally. As part of a commitment towards local art, Eastgate has therefore joined forces with the Basildon Arts Trust, The Basildon Heritage Trail, The Basildon Arts Trail and South Essex College to offer local artists an opportunity to showcase their skills in an Upper Mall store opposite New Look and Topman.

Basildon-Eastgate Art officially opened to shoppers at 10am on Saturday June 2nd. It is now open daily from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday and will continue over several weeks there throughout summer.

Works of art on display will include paintings, some of which come from the valuable BAT collection, photography and sculptures, while students of South Essex College will also be invited to exhibit their works. The gallery will also host educational sessions and workshops as local artists give advice to those wishing to pursue art either as a hobby or even a career.

The concept of an art exhibition at Eastgate is not exactly new: a previous gallery here in April 2006 attracted 51,000 visitors over a six-month period and demonstrates the interest in, and popularity of, art within the borough.

Eastgate Centre Manager Ian Clark said “We have been planning this for several months and now we are ready to go. The new BEA gallery is a really exciting venture for Eastgate and the community as a whole. It will demonstrate the depth of artistic talent that exists within our midst, provide a wonderful cultural attraction for shoppers and make a huge, positive statement about Basildon.”
